Namewright

Will your table mix these up?

Paste the names of your party and recurring NPCs. The checker finds the clashes (shared first letters, sound-alikes, rhymes, tongue-twisters) before the first session finds them for you.

What we found

Why names clash at the table

Reading a name on a character sheet and hearing it across a table are different skills. On paper, Kael and Kaelen are two clear words; spoken quickly by a DM juggling a fight, they are the same sound. The checker looks for the patterns that cause that.

What it checks

  • Shared first letters. The most common cause of "wait, which one?". Three or more names on one letter is marked as a fix.
  • Sound-alikes. Names whose spellings differ by one or two letters, or that open with the same three letters.
  • Rhymes. Matching endings such as -ael or -wyn. Fine for siblings, confusing for strangers.
  • Tongue-twisters. Four or more consonants in a row, several apostrophes, or a name so long it will be shortened for you.

Fixing a clash

The checker lists the first letters no one has used. Each one opens a fresh generator roll for the people you choose, all starting with that letter. If you want to keep a name but ease the clash, decide on a short form now, before the table does it for you.

Questions

What does the party name checker look for?

Names that start with the same letter, names that sound alike (close spelling or the same opening), names that rhyme, and names that are hard to say or write: long runs of consonants, several apostrophes, or a very long length.

Does it send my names anywhere?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device. Your list is remembered on this device only, so it is there next session.

Is a clash always a problem?

No. Siblings who share a letter or a rhyme can be a feature. The checker marks clashes between names that should be easy to tell apart as “fix” and the softer ones as “consider”.

How many names can I check?

Up to fourteen at once, which covers a large party plus a few recurring NPCs.
