How dwarf names work

Dûrakh is built from hard consonants and closed syllables: b, d, g, k and th at the front, r, n, k and rd at the back. Stress falls on the first syllable, so every name lands like a hammer blow.

Many dwarven names are a single strong root with an ending: -in, -ur and -ak for men, -a, -ra and -eth for women. Others join two roots. Dur means stone and thrak means forge, so Durthrak is "stone-forge".

Clan names are usually trade-names in the common tongue, earned and kept for generations: Coppermantle, Slatebelt, Oathbinder. Some old clans still use a Dûrakh compound instead.

Tips for choosing

  • Dwarven clan names make great quest hooks. A clan called Oathbinder had better have kept its word, or very publicly broken it.
  • Keep personal names short. A dwarf with a four-syllable name is either very noble or very unusual.
  • Use the starts-with filter to give a whole family alliterative names, a common dwarven tradition in many settings.

Questions

What are good dwarf clan names?

Strong compounds of a material and a trait or tool, such as Cindermaul, Runebelt or Granitebrow. The generator makes thousands, and screens out names from official sourcebooks.

How do you pronounce dwarven names?

Stress the first syllable and keep the vowels short: Tharek is "THAH-rehk". Dûrakh's kh is a throaty sound, as in Scottish "loch".
