Namewright

Licensing & legal

This page explains our approach in plain language. It is not legal advice.

Not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast

Namewright is an independent project. It is unofficial and is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored or approved by Wizards of the Coast LLC. “Dungeons & Dragons” and “D&D” are trademarks of their owner and are used here only in a descriptive way, to say which game the names are meant for. They are not part of our name, logo, domain or branding. The names you generate here are suitable for any fifth-edition game.

Namewright does not use Wizards of the Coast artwork, logos, setting or character names, monster statistics, or rules text. We deliberately exclude the names of well-known fictional characters and the sample names printed in official sourcebooks from our results.

Our own content

The constructed languages (Sylthae, Vhaerzyn, Dûrakh, Hearthen, Tinkletongue, Gruhk, Kaluthi, Xarthic, Ashmodri, Aurethi and Snikkit), their sound systems and word lists, all tables of taverns, shops, towns, guilds, ships, gods and NPCs, the guides, and the site design are original works of Namewright.

What our languages are, and are not

These languages are constructed by us. Their words and meanings are our own invention; they are not reconstructions of anything historical. They are not the languages of any published game, and they are not Tolkien's Sindarin or Quenya. Our tongues are built to avoid Tolkien's invented vocabulary.

The three human naming cultures are different. Heartland, Highland and Sunlands use real historical name-elements from Old English and Germanic, Old Irish and Welsh, and Latin. Their meanings are the commonly cited ones, simplified for readability, and the combinations are modern inventions in the same style. Historical name-elements are facts about language, not anyone's property.

System Reference Document attribution

Namewright refers to the names of several player species, including Dragonborn, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Goliath, Halfling, Human, Orc and Tiefling, which appear in the System Reference Document 5.2. We use those names only to say which people a generated name suits. No SRD rules text, game statistics or other SRD content is reproduced on this site.

This work includes material from the System Reference Document 5.2 (“SRD 5.2”) by Wizards of the Coast LLC, available at https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd. The SRD 5.2 is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, available at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode.

Some peoples on this site are not in the SRD 5.2. Aasimar is not included in it, and Half-Elf and Half-Orc were removed from it. We use Aasimar, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Drow and Goblin only as the common names of fantasy peoples, to describe which name style suits them.

Using the names you generate

Names and details you generate on Namewright are free to use in any game, story, stream, product or publication, commercial or not, with no attribution required. A link back is always appreciated.
