How elf names work

Sylthae favours liquid sounds (l, r, th, s, v) and open, ringing vowels, with the stress usually falling on the second-to-last syllable. Harsh clusters are rare; a name should sound as if it could be sung.

An elven name is usually two roots joined, or one root with a gendered ending. Sael means star and lirae means song, so Saelirae is "star-song". Feminine names often close in -ira, -iel, -wyn or -ith; masculine names in -an, -ion, -or or -ath. A bare root works for either.

Because every concept has one fixed root, families share sounds. A mother named for the moon (ilun) might name her children Ilunwyn and Ilunar. Use the kindred button on any result to see names that share its root.

Elven family names are compounds without an ending, often naming a place, an omen or an ancestor's deed. They read as poetic phrases: "Mist-heart", "Leaf-dream".

Tips for choosing

  • Say the name aloud. If it does not flow, re-roll; elven names should never feel effortful.
  • Long-lived peoples collect names. An elf might keep a short childhood name and take a compound adult name later.
  • Use the meaning as a character hook: an elf called "Ash-gold" was perhaps born after a forest fire.

Questions

What does my elf name mean?

Each result shows its meaning and the roots it is made from. "Star-song", for example, comes from sael (star) + lirae (song).

How do you pronounce elvish names?

Every name has a respelling with the stressed syllable in capitals, such as lee-RAY-nah. In Sylthae, ae sounds like "ay", th is soft as in "thin", and c is always hard.

Is this the same as Tolkien's Elvish?

No. Sylthae is our own constructed tongue with its own roots, built so that it never borrows Tolkien's words.
